How do I know if my gutters need repair or replacement?
Watch them in a heavy rain. Gutters that overflow, sag, pull away from the house or leak at the seams need attention, and so do downspouts that dump water right next to the foundation. Peeling paint or rot on the fascia board behind the gutters is another sign.
Where should my downspouts drain?
Away from the house. A downspout should empty at least a few feet out from the foundation, onto ground that slopes away, usually through an elbow and a splash block or an extension.
